How to Make Buttermilk Biscuits with Crisco

Preheat you oven to 450 degrees.

Add all your dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Whisk them together until fully combined. Using a pastry cutter, cut in the cold Crisco or lard until dime-size chunks throughout your flour mixture. Add in your buttermilk last and fold together the dough. Be careful to not over-mix your dough. It’s okay to have little bits and chunks of Crisco or lard throughout. This will help make your biscuits flakey!

If the dough is too thick to stir you can just knead by hand. It gets pretty messy but you do not want to risk over-mixing it with a stand or hand mixer.

This recipe is one of my families favourites. I think there is nothing more hygge and cozy than a hot biscuit with butter and jam paired with a hot cup of tea. I love making these on a rainy day with my children. We cuddle up with a good book and enjoy. I really hope you love this recipe as much as we do!

Can I add sourdough discard?

Yes you can! you can add 1/2 of sourdough discard to this recipe just subtract 1/4 of buttermilk and 1/4 of flour. Adding in sourdough discard can give these simple buttermilk biscuits a boost in flavor and some of the benefits of fermentation.

Can I add Freshly Milled Flour?

Yes! this recipe I love swapping half of my flour with a freshly milled grain. I have used both spelt and kamut in this recipe and the flavour was absoutley incridble. Please know when using freshly milled flour that flavour and texture will be different than using all purpose flour.
